God - Pleasing Giving
“Now concerning the
collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of
Galatia . . . . Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay
by him in store, as God hath prospered him . . . .’ (1 Cor. 16:1, 2)
1. It is built upon
God’s grace to us. ‘And now, brothers, we want you to know about the
grace that God has given the Macedonian churches’ (v. 1).
2. It is to be a joy,
a delight, a pleasure. ‘Their overflowing joy…welled up in rich
generosity“ (v. 2).
3. It sees beyond
personal or collective hardships with the eyes of faith. ‘Out of the
most severe trial, their overflowing joy and extreme poverty welled up
in rich generosity’ (v. 2).
4. It can only come
through first giving of self to the Lord. ‘But they gave themselves
first to the Lord’ (v.5).
5. It is a quality God
wants to work in you. ‘See that you excel in this grace of giving’ (v.
7).
6. It grows out of the
way Christ gives to us. ‘For your sakes He became poor’ (v. 9).“
